John Slezak collection [picture]. 1942-1979.

Contains the following types of materials: Photographs, photo album. Covers the following war and/or time period: 1942-1979. Contains photographs of the following unit and organization: Ordnance Corps, U.S. Army. The photographs in the John Slezak collection date from 1942 to 1979. Most belong to two categories: those of his tenure at the Chicago Ordnance District and hundreds of photos of Army-Navy "E" award ceremonies at various manufacturing plants in the Chicago District and his service as Asst. Secretary of the Army and subsequent assignments as a civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army for a number of years. The Army-Navy "E" award ceremonies, though at various sites, are rather rote as are all of the various conferences as aide to the Secretary of the Army and conferences in that capacity and subsequent attendance at Army Secretariat Alumni Conferences for 1963, 1964, 1966, 1967, and 1968. There are no photos of John Slezak's career before being assigned to the Chicago District.

John Slezak's career was varied and full of accomplishments. He was born in Czechoslovakia, April 18, 1896. He came to the United States (U.S.) as a young lad and enlisted as a private in the Ordnance Corps during World War I. He received a degree in Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1923 and began a career in various machining companies.
